CasaRocco Gallery is pleased to announce “ONLY IN NEW YORK” a solo exhibition with Antonio Vacirca.
The opening reception will be held on December 12 at 7pm CET, inside the San Rocco Museum of Contemporary Art – Sicily (Italy)
Antonio’s New York is not what everyone expects to see (the one of the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, or the Brooklyn Bridge). It is the truest city. The city with guts. The one that makes you, however, gasp. A frame of life that, ONLY IN NEW YORK, you can admire to grasp all the possible nuances.
ONLY IN NEW YORK do you have the feeling of being able to wish. To do and have everything you have always imagined. ONLY IN NEW YORK, you can look yourself in the face, thanks to others, as Antonio does observing himself by pointing the lens to the other.
Each photo, in this exhibition, tells us a story: the one narrated by those who live there. By those who, every day, relate to the infinite paradoxes of the metropolis. With multiculturalism, with artists. With freedom of expression, with business, with people passing by. With the homeless sleeping in the subway cars and with everything that the mainstream, generally, does not tell.
As Antonio says:
New York it’s for sure one of the most exciting cities in the world. I guess everybody feels some kind of magical attraction. I always dreamed of taking a walk on the streets of this town looking for the pictures I never saw in movies, on the TV screen, read in books – magazines, or heard in a song.
Regarding this relation with the music, and before visiting the Big Apple, Antonio previously met New York – and coveted – through the songs of Lou Reed, Talking Heads, Ramones, Velvet Underground, Tom Waits, James Brown, David Bowie, Chet Baker, and The Pogues. When he arrived, during his travel report, he discovered the city exactly as he had imagined.
It is from this experience that his research has been born with a selection of 15 photos that takes the name of New York Songs. As curators, we would like to imagine that everyone who is going to enjoy Antonio’s work, in this exhibition, could feel, behind their own ears, all the songs that have been a support of creation and imagination. Of this incredible and sensible artist who is Antonio Vacirca.
